Can you tell me how to get BACK to Sesame Street?

I grew up with my brain quite literally glued to PBS -

  • Mr. Rogers -I would have LOVED to be his neighbor! He was so nice! And really, as much as the Land of Make Believe puppets kind of scared me, you can't get much better than good, wholesome Mr. Roger's Neighborhood.

  • Reading Rainbow- I would go read a book, give a review to my imaginary camera, and wait to be discovered. I thought they just chose random kids, so I would stand by the phone and hold my breath for LeVar's call.

  • Cooking/Art Shows - After all the kid stuff was over with, I would stick around and watch all the cooking and art shows. I still like watching cooking shows, even if I never make what they make.

  • And last, but most certainly not least, Sesame Street- I don't think anything could beat that show in my eyes. I mean, come on. Bert doing "the Pigeon", Don Music beating his brains out on the piano, Alistair Cookie on Monsterpeice Theater, Guy Smiley's shows, Super Grover "saving" the day....Need I say more?

I think we can all hear a rant coming on........

Here it is. WHERE THE HECK DID SESAME STREET GO?! Most everything about it now just disappoints me - from the new hip-hop theme to the endless Elmo's World to the brutal cutting of my favorite characters. (Don't even get me started on all the new kid's shows out there nowadays. That's a new rant for a new day.)

This picture I saw online says it all for me...

Am I alone here?

My feelings run deep on this one, as you well know.

I'll just keep buying up the Old School SS DVDs and hope my kids never even hear of Abby Cadabby.

I'm a horrible parent, so I really don't pay attention that much to the shows when my kids watch. I think it's mostly because I only let them watch PBS. Both my kids learn lots of stuff from PBS shows still (shapes, colors, ABC's, counting, etc.). And QQ LOOOOOOOVVVVVVEEES Elmo!

I don't hate Elmo, I'm just bitter that they took away my favorites.... :) And Timpani, you are a great mom!!!!

I agree. Things just aren't the same as they used to be. It seems like everything has to be faster paced and "modern". They need to make Mr. Rogers Seasons. Hmmm. They do. I still think PBS shows are beneficial and some even good but it isn't the same.

I think our biggest problem with Sesame Street was when Jim Hensen died. It was the same thing when Walt Disney died. Things changed and we miss their genius.

Don't kill me, but I didn't like any of those shows when I was a kid. I thought Mr. Rogers was boring torture. A nice guy yes, but I didn't like his show. I didn't like Sesame Street either, and a cooking show - WAY worse than Mr. Rogers! Nope, didn't like Reading Rainbow either. (And today's kids' TV is mostly total POOP!) I want Magic School Bus & Bill Nye back!

you know, i am so with ya karen. all of it. pbs totally sucks now, as does tv in general. john and i don't have it. not even an antenna. if we want to watch something, we netflix it. no commercials, and total control over what our kids watch. i totally recommend it. ;)

Well, it's good to know that I wasn't the only 5-year-old watching Yan Can Cook.
